What is Holiday Blues?

Temporary feelings of depression and sadness during the holiday season. It’s often associated with unrealistic expectations, memories, or extra stress associated with the season.

My Life and Holiday Blues

In October 2019, I realized various triggers and abnormalities. It was a no-brainer the holiday season was approaching. In 2019, my family and I experienced a significant loss. I never imagined being fatherless nor did I imagine dreading the “most wonderful time of the year.” I often spent the holiday seasons with my family and looked forward to being in the presence of my father. He often acted like a kid in the candy shop during Christmas.

Subconsciously, I was equipped to handle the “blues” like a champ. I was informed the “first” following the loss of a loved one is often difficult. I was strong, could/would incorporate various healing modalities, and serve as a vessel for my family and clients. I was in for a rude awakening. The “waves of grief” graced my presence. When I was UP, I was UP, when I was DOWN, I was DOWN. I am a Reiki practitioner (energy healing). I know various techniques and tools to self-soothe; however, I am human.

Here are 12 ways I manage to combat Holiday Blues:

  • Say “NO.”
  • Remain realistic.
  • Spend time with family creating memories.
  • Use healing and relaxation modalities (Reiki, massage, breathing techniques, etc.). Seek professional support.
  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Rest.
  • Avoid stress or blues eating (overeating).
  • Remain open-minded.
  • Exercise.
  • Avoid social media.
  • Listen to music.

The magical Goddess encourages you to seek holistic modalities, professional assistance, and remember you are HUMAN. Holidays or normal days, the blues can strike. Take care of yourself and never allow anyone to tell you how to grieve.
